Introducing

Rev. Dr. Robert Perkins

Dr. Robert PerkinsIt is with great joy and praise that we introduce to you Reverend Doctor Robert Perkins, God’s choice for MVPC’s Pastor/Head of Staff! The Pastor Nominating Committee thanks you for entrusting us with this challenging task. Through your many prayers, we have felt God’s hand from our first meeting to our final selection of Rob and his wife Mitali.
We reviewed over 90 applications, listened to dozens of sermons, skyped with and interviewed six pastors, and the Holy Spirit shouted that Rob was the pastor we sought. Based on the MVPC Mission Study Report, we listed 81 desirable pastoral characteristics and Rob meets or exceeds each one. The committee met with him on three different occasions, visited his church unannounced, and listened to many of his sermons. We voted unanimously to approve him and we present him to you with great excitement.
We met Rob early on in the process and liked him from the beginning. He patiently and humbly waited for us to go through the process of reviewing other applications, only to return to his. His preaching is so insightful, filled with biblical truth and contemporary application, that at the end of each of his sermons we have grown deeper in our relationship with Christ. He is also mission minded, having served more than seven years in India, Bangladesh, and Thailand.
Rob received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Master of Science in Computer Science from Stanford University. He also attended UC Berkeley for the Graduate Professional Studies in India Program. He received a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry in preaching from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
Rob holds with unwavering commitment to the authority of Scripture and is dedicated to expository preaching. He has a vision to empower the laity to do ministry and reach out to the community and beyond. His passion is for small group ministry as an arena for discipleship, spiritual growth, and transformation. He brings fresh ideas on reaching out to St. Mary’s students and Lamorinda’s intellectual community. Prayer, personal retreat, and accountability undergird all that he does and says.
He presently serves as Head of Staff at Newton Presbyterian Church near Boston, Massachusetts, an environment similar to the Bay Area with many of the same issues. Rob and Mitali met at Stanford and have been married 26 years. She is an established children’s book author and has been a lecturer for St. Mary’s Jan Term the last two years. They have two sons, Tim and Jim; Tim attends St. Mary’s and Jim attends Boston College.
What does Rob love? “…to see Jesus revealed as people begin to experience ‘ah-ha!’ moments by digging deeply into Scripture and discovering the depth of riches there. Inevitably, people realize that God’s Word is accessible to them, and that prayerful study in community can bring amazing life transformations.”
We look forward with great anticipation to how God will use Rob to lead us onward in maturity in Christ and make a difference in our community and beyond!
